Running a cleaning business is no easy task. Beyond never knowing what you’re walking in to, home cleaners manage inventory and staff alongside their daily jobs that take them all over Hastings and Northumberland County. Janine Johnstone of Janine’s Clean runs a small team of local women offering home cleaning, move-in and out services, and real estate cleaning within the Quinte area and surrounding counties.

Janine has always taken care of other people, and the progress to starting and running her own enterprise came after years of experience working for other home care and home cleaning businesses. She sought to make the process more enjoyable, provide a better and more personable service to her clients, and offer more employment opportunities to local women in the Quinte region.

How long have you been in this business?

Janine: Just over a year, and has been very successful so far! I was a financial manager in Alberta for 12 and burnt myself out and ended up taking a 4 month leave to focus on myself. In those four months my daughter looked at me and was like “you need to go home.”

When I came back to the Quinte area I worked for VON And Molly Maids, and thought why am I doing this for minimum wage when I can be doing this , enjoying my work, and in a better environment, and decided I would start out on my own.

How many people do you have working on your team?

Janine: We have had three people on the team and just recently added a new team member so we now have four! All talented local women.

What inspired you to start your business in the Quinte area?

Janine: I love to clean! I think what makes my day is when our clients leave for the clean and they’re all nervous about what to expect then they come home with the biggest smile on their face.

What is your favourite thing about the Quinte area?

Janine: My favourite thing about the Quinte area is all of the friendliness in the community. People say hi and are just so kind when you’re out and about.

How would you describe your business’s success so far?

Janine: I have literally gone over and above in my expectations for the business in the past year and never could have dreamed I would be where I am today.

What do you require to succeed in this business?

Janine: Motivation, That’s for sure! Friendliness, If I can

What do you think the secret to excellent service is?

Janine: Customer relations for sure, and to know that I am the best out there and the best at what I do!

If you could tell people one thing about your business, what is the secret to keeping a clean space, what would that be?

Janine: There is No clean like Janine’s Clean!
